I remember seeing recipes that attributed the Senate bean soup to Michigan, where I grew up and where navy beans were produced in the “thumb” region. I love the way you interject reality into calm storytelling during this chaotic time, keep at it!
You can also cook those ham hocks and broth all day in a crock pot on low. Use beans that were soaked overnight about halfway through your six to eight hours of cooking. It’s smells divine on a chilly winter day.
You can also buy bones from the Honey Baked Ham place, especially around holidays.

Yes, it's purportedly made with Michigan Navy Beans!
Me too! I am from central Michigan, which also grows a lot of navy beans. Michigan is still the largest producer of navy beans.
So that soup looks amazing ... thank you for the recipe & the talk. This soup will be made at my house the first rainy &/or cool Sunday afternoon.
Wonderful! I hope you do and enjoy.
I did the survey and saved the recipe for another day. I had the soup once on a trip to Washington- do they still only charge 19c? Or is it more now?
That's a great question! I think I paid $10 for a cup a few years ago.
