When my optimism fades, I look to the Chinese immigrants who knew they were sailing away, never to see their homeland or families again, for hard labor and low wages. They did it anyway. Then became the hated immigrants portrayed in the news as animals. And yet, there's so much joy in this community, as well as a long view of history and the confidence that we are resourceful and will survive.
I think of the 442nd Japanese Americans who saw their loyalty called into question and found families robbed of their businesses, farms, homes. And they fought for this country they believed in, becoming the most decorated battalion.
And yet, the internment camps that once held Japanese CITIZENS are being repurpose by our modern day gestapo. Children ripped from mothers' arms, shipped to unknown prisons for nothing more than to sate the hunger of cruel people. It's very hard to keep hope alive.
Your trifle looks beautiful and your work gives us hope. Keep it up and be sure to take care of yourself, too. We need you for long haul.
Jacqueline, the 442nd might be the best proof of this thesis. Men whose country had just taken everything from their families volunteered to fight for it anyway, and came home the most decorated unit of the war. You're right that it's hard to hold onto right now, but the communities you're describing kept the long view through worse than this, and they're still here, still joyful.

I have to run to the store to get some things because now I have a sudden urge to to make a trifle for me and mine because we spend this night and several surrounding it comforting our pets who are terrified of all the noise.
I very much appreciate the calm, thoughtful way you present the facts and provide information. Been following for a while and finally paid to subscribe admittedly, this was influenced by this delicious trifle which I immediately made after seeing this post. :)
