I'm a hospital nurse. I worked through the ENTIRE Covid pandemic years and the mop up years afterwards and if people are gonna get spun up over the fact that Dr. Fauci thought "no masks" then thought "masks good "- well they would totally freak out over the things that changed constantly on the fly in the hospital. We were all doing our best on the complete unknown with the info we had at the time and pivoting daily - sometimes hourly - over what was the best thing to do. I can tell you this - in my hospital, there was zero patient to staff transmission. We masked at all times in patient areas and maintained six foot distance. You know where there WAS transmission? Staff to staff in breakrooms and other areas where people were unmasked and sitting close together. We watched patients, patient family members, and staff members die of COVID. If anyone has a reason to be bitter, it is us. Trying to get people to help us help them was like banging your head into concrete. And we do NOT blame Dr. Fauci. As you pointed out so well, his track record is proven. None of us are perfect. Certainly no one on that committee this week.

Once again the representatives in Washington who called themselves Christians are the first to throw the stone, as if their path through life had been absolute perfection, so much so that they are literally using the same people they continually take advantage of to their own benefit.
It is easy to look backward and judge (hind site is 20/20). I feel as if we Americans feel like we have the right to be untouched by so much ie wars, disease, etc. when in fact it can happen to anyone. Why does no one talk about the fact that 20% more people died in red states (for the most part unvaccinated) than in blue states. The same mob now wants retribution.
I have great admiration for Dr. Fauci’s contribution and courage during an unprecedented time in our history. It was a hell of a lot better than our president who pushed injecting bleach.
Finally, why not take all that we learned from Covid and create a base protocol for the next pandemic? It WILL be different and really…what scientist would want to take charge if this is how they will be treated.
My future daughter in law was diagnosed 4 years ago with vasculitis. The fine doctors at Mass General were clear to credit Dr Fauci for the protocol used to save her life. He is a brilliant man that I will forever be grateful to.
Thank you for this cogent, well-reasoned and researched piece. Dr. Fascinating deserves so much better than the performative antics of the republicans on the committee. All in service of their rabid, intellectually and morally bankrupt base. And of course the distraction from the failures of this administration were an undisputed goal.of this hearing. I have been sick to my stomach over the way Dr. Fauci was disrespected.
You know, it is often said that people of achievement, success, and/or remarkable achievement have done so *only* by trying and occasionally, failing—in other words, you learn MORE from your mistakes. Hence, NO one is PERFECT all the time. How is that lesson lost here in looking at Dr. Fauci and all he attempted to do under extraordinarily *difficult* (the Drump Admin) circumstances. I was in awe watching him maintain composure during some of Drump’s insane rants (inject bleach?). Dr. Fauci is an amazing public servant, medical researcher and extraordinarily honest and talented humanitarian. We should all be GRATEFUL for Dr. Fauci.
And let us NOT forget how heroic the healhcare workers were during those unreal challenges.
I was lucky, as my great-aunt taught me about the 1918-20 Spanish flu lessons in which most of my family died. Her experiences stayed with her until her passing in 1995 at the age of 95. Her experiences allowed me to flow with Covid-19 challenges.
