Thank you. I get so tired of trying to explain this. My fifth grade students understand, why not conservative adults?

Same here. Now I can refer folks to this essay. I think the (deliberate) misunderstanding is due to the unwillingness (inability) to understand "two things at once" - that these can be parallel, even overlap, as they seem to see the world only in binary opposition.
